Summary:

The Office of Advancement’s Data Science team delivers wisdom in data by interacting with partners to translate problems into analytical solutions.  The team delivers advanced solutions utilizing a variety of data sources and types to craft compelling and scalable advanced analytical and machine learning products that increase awareness, engagement, advocacy, and fundraising results for the university.

The Data Scientist works with analytic and business partners in a multi-faceted environment combining higher education, fundraising, engagement, and marketing to develop strategy and deliver actionable, data-driven insights and solutions. They conceptualize and create analytic strategies for complex issues, design flexible and reusable analytic tools and models, manage multiple projects simultaneously, operationalize their findings and models, translate work products into meaningful guidance, develop and deliver presentations and data visualizations, and communicate effectively with business partners.

This position serves as a technical contributor for advanced data analytics initiatives, creating value to leadership by compiling and analyzing business data from within Advancement and the university using our CRM, digital engagement platforms and other internal and external sources to provide a 360-degree view of our constituents.  They are responsible for generating solutions to existing business challenges and studying the business to ask (and answer) questions nobody has asked before.

Reporting to the Associate Director, the Data Scientist is expected to be a strong technician who keeps abreast of current practices and trends, and is able to translate technical jargon in a professional manner when working with and presenting recommendations to a diverse group of business partners and clients. This position must exhibit agility when competing and/or shifting priorities exist. They must demonstrate a desire to create business value over all else, even when the competitor is statistical elegance.  Conversely, they show continual improvement of theoretical and applied skills with evidence of a desire to continue technical learning and growth – both as a statistician and a business professional.

Duties and Responsibilities:

70%   Advanced Analytics and Predictive Modeling – Evaluate the current operational environment and identify opportunities to leverage advanced analytics.  Consult with business partners to understand, align, and deliver analytic work to support business objectives and priorities. Complete data science projects from start to finish, including data blending and wrangling, exploratory analysis, feature creation and selection, and model training and evaluation.  Build and deploy prototypes to demonstrate solutions and prove concepts.

Proactively identify and test sources of new data.  Utilize advanced SQL to create complex datasets.  Manage, acquire, clean, and blend data from multiple sources to support analyses. Handle missing data and transform and explore data for understanding and further analyses.  Build re-usable scripts to automate and create efficiencies. Leverage a wide range of data analysis, machine learning, and statistical modeling algorithms and methods to solve business problems, develop new predictive models and scoring, and provide insight and direction.  Identify the right algorithms and statistical techniques for specific projects based on the business problem and any limitations. Blend techniques as needed for optimal performance.

Develop best-in-class solutions, tools, and data visualizations that answer strategic questions.  Work with colleagues to operationalize models and products where possible. Create, package, and communicate analytic work using appropriate medium for relevant insights, including impactful story line and applicable data visualizations.  Create training documentation.  Consult with business partners and end-users on interpreting, understanding, and applying scoring and analysis to ensure all teams are as effective as possible. Easily explain concepts in a non-technical way that the audience can understand.

Build scripts, documentation, packages, and systems for repeatable, reusable and reproducible analyses.  Demonstrate excellent organization skills throughout the development of analytical solutions by following team standards for documentation, code management, project organization, etc.

20%   Analytical Strategy – Work with the Associate Director to develop and implement data strategy, department standards, and best practices; identify opportunities for external data acquisition; and propose effective data architecture and technology infrastructure to support analytical activities and increase operational efficiency.  Ensure consistency of approach related to data extraction, analysis techniques, and key findings. Work with the Associate Director to develop internal documentation for commonly used data tables and files.  Identify and communicate existing gaps or issues in the data.

Promote data-driven culture by developing documentation and training materials to continually educate and promote existing data products and data usage among Advancement and university staff. Actively contribute to the continuous learning mindset of the organization by bringing in new ideas and perspectives that stretch the thinking of the group.  Serve as a technical resource and subject matter expert to others in advanced analytics, statistics, and machine learning.  Build and keep up with the knowledge of literature, practices, and techniques in data science communities, as well as continually grow knowledge and understanding related to Advancement and university business areas. Understand Advancement and university information systems and be a subject matter expert on the data and its usage.

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Data Analytics, Statistics, Applied Math, Computer Science, Computer Information Systems or Management Information Systems, Marketing, or Psychology preferred
  • Five+ years of analytics or data science experience in a business environment to include at least three years’ experience building, validating, and leveraging machine learning models and at least two years’ experience analyzing and synthesizing data and presenting usable insights and recommending courses of action;
  • Proficiency in modern analytics programming languages, like R and/or Python, as well as data extraction, manipulation, and programming using SQL
  • Strong foundation knowledge statistics/applied mathematics leveraged in a business or marketing setting
  • Proven success translating ambiguous business problems into a conceptual analytical and technical architecture
  • Strong skills manipulating missing / corrupt / unstructured data from multiple data sources to deliver key insights

Desired:

  • Two+ years’ experience visualizing and presenting data for stakeholders using advanced data visualization tools like Tableau, D3 or Shiny, etc.

Reporting to the Director, Reporting and Analytics, the Senior Data Analytics Consultant provides fundraising data analysis and reporting services for the executive leadership team of the Development arm of the Office of Advancement.

 

The Sr. Data Analytics Consultant will be primarily responsible for the development and implementation of measurement and analytics strategies designed to ensure appropriate operational models; to monitor and evaluate applicable metrics to compare and analyze data to support strategic fundraising decisions and process improvement; to ensure communication with senior leadership and synthesize data into useful and insightful information; and to write and automate tools and scripts to increase efficiency and reduce manual efforts.

 

The Sr. Data Analytics Consultant will design and build data visualizations using diverse data sets and will be instrumental in developing and translating analysis, data modeling and ad hoc decision support to fulfill the needs of the development organization. This includes data analysis and reporting to enhance operational efficiency, encouraging data driven decisions and promoting a higher level of data consumption as well as best practices to improve services and processes of strategic importance to the Development team.

 

Provides significant data analysis using both descriptive and predictive statistical analysis expertise for the Development leadership team. This work includes, but is not limited to, responsibility for the ongoing design and maintenance of monthly Development performance reports and the fundraising dashboard. It further includes conducting significant data analysis and data mining required to understand the results found and communication of insights to leadership.

 

This work is accomplished using visual query tools, custom built standard outputs, Microsoft SQL Reporting Services tools, data analysis tools like SPSS or Excel and Tableau.

Responsibilities:

Data Analysis and Data Mining (40%)

·         Use statistical methods to analyze fundraising data to identify statistically significant patterns and trends that generate actionable insights

Report, Dashboard and Scorecard Creation (40%)

·         Analyze report results with a focus on explaining changes, inconsistencies and any patters that are identified.

 

Become an established Subject Matter Expert within the Organization (20%)

·         Work collaboratively with Development leadership to understand and design analytical approaches to open-ended strategic business problems and communicates the findings to key stakeholders through reports, presentations, storytelling and thoughtful discussion;

·         Collaborate with the Development leadership team in order to identify trends and opportunities to improve and maximize fundraising revenue

·         Serve as a technical and educational resource to others on fundraising data and benchmarks, modeling, data acquisition and rapid analysis for insight generation

 

Performance Objectives

First 1-3 months

1)     Demonstrate basic knowledge and understanding of the higher education advancement industry, with particular emphasis on the major gift fundraising component in particular.

2)     Demonstrate intermediate level understanding of the t-SQL language, SQL Server Reporting Services and Tableau.

3)     Demonstrate basic understanding of the advancement data warehouse.

 

First 3-6 months

1)     Demonstrate intermediate knowledge and understanding of higher education major gift oriented fundraising.

2)     Assume technical responsibility for the monthly fundraising suite of reports and being transition of existing t-SQL extract – Excel legacy reports to SSRS and / or Tableau.

3)     Assume technical responsibility for the existing SSRS based Fundraising Dashboard and all linked reports.

 

First 12 months

1)     Demonstrate intermediate knowledge and understanding of the higher education advancement industry.

More about Advancement Reporting and Analytics
Reporting and Analytics (R&A) is one part of the Business Intelligence and Data Science department totaling 15 full-time staff within Advancement. R&A is comprised of 10 staff members with nearly 100 years combined experience working in the Advancement and Enterprise Reporting professions. We are an extremely collaborative group possessing particular technical expertise in t-SQL, SSRS and Tableau. The larger BI team also then possesses extensive experience in Market Research and Data Sciences. Those groups are similarly collaborative in their approach and give the larger BI team experience in market research and advanced statistical techniques. Finally our in group project manager is guiding us in the implementation of the Agile Project Management approach.

 

Experience Requirements

The selected candidate for this position must have demonstrated success in several areas, including:

·         Bachelor’s degree in Data Analytics, Statistics, Applied Math, Computer Science, Computer Information Systems or Management Information Systems, Marketing, Psychology or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

·         5 years’ experience in a data analyst role.

·         Experience with enterprise reporting tools (i.e. MS BI Suite).

·         Two years of experience using SQL with preference to Microsoft T-SQL.

·         2 years of experience with statistical analysis using statistical packages for analyzing datasets (Excel, SPSS, R, SAS etc.).

·         2 years of experience visualizing and presenting data.

 

Desired requirements include:

·         Master’s degree in Statistics, Business, Computer Science, Economics, Engineering, Mathematics or other quantitative disciplines.

·         Experience in the non-profit fundraising space.

The Performance Marketing Analyst will serve as an integral member of the Performance Marketing team. As a member of the team, this position will work in a collaborative environment with other subject matter experts to deliver a range of support including but not limited to media operations, media execution and media optimization.

This position will primarily support paid media with a focus on brand media and performance media digital campaigns. The role will also support broader digital analytics including Scotts owned-channel digital platforms.

In this role you will:

  • Implement digital campaigns. Experience with Facebook Ad Accounts, Facebook Business Manager, Google Adwords and Google Campaign Manager a strong plus. From campaign setup including operational and execution support across various digital media campaigns
    • Implement classification mappings

You will work with marketing colleagues and cross-functional internal partners to make the website the hub of a multi-faceted digital marketing program incorporating search marketing, social media, email, forms, member engagement, and more. The strategy focus of this position is responsible for driving and articulating the program effectiveness by analyzing current strategies, recommending and implementing optimizations for the website to improve integration with digital campaigns, and interpreting and detailing measurements.

Responsibilities:

Web marketing: Work closely with internal teams and digital marketing partners, helping to integrate and align marketing campaigns and content across social media, email marketing, sales, and other marketing teams.
Web strategy and planning: Review, recommend, and implement strategic web solutions, including content, layout, and architecture improvements, coordinating strategy and execution with marketing, sales, design, and development.

Qualifications:

Summary:

Reporting to the Director, Reporting and Analytics, the Senior Data Analytics Consultant provides fundraising data analysis and reporting services for the executive leadership team of the Development arm of the Office of Advancement.

 

The Sr. Data Analytics Consultant will be primarily responsible for the development and implementation of measurement and analytics strategies designed to ensure appropriate operational models; to monitor and evaluate applicable metrics to compare and analyze data to support strategic fundraising decisions and process improvement; to ensure communication with senior leadership and synthesize data into useful and insightful information; and to write and automate tools and scripts to increase efficiency and reduce manual efforts.

 

The Sr. Data Analytics Consultant will design and build data visualizations using diverse data sets and will be instrumental in developing and translating analysis, data modeling and ad hoc decision support to fulfill the needs of the development organization. This includes data analysis and reporting to enhance operational efficiency, encouraging data driven decisions and promoting a higher level of data consumption as well as best practices to improve services and processes of strategic importance to the Development team.

 

Provides significant data analysis using both descriptive and predictive statistical analysis expertise for the Development leadership team. This work includes, but is not limited to, responsibility for the ongoing design and maintenance of monthly Development performance reports and the fundraising dashboard. It further includes conducting significant data analysis and data mining required to understand the results found and communication of insights to leadership.

 

This work is accomplished using visual query tools, custom built standard outputs, Microsoft SQL Reporting Services tools, data analysis tools like SPSS or Excel and Tableau.

40%     Creates Reports, Dashboards and Scorecards

Gathers requirements, creates queries, builds reports and dashboards that integrate multiple sources of data, identify actionable insights and conclusions, and translate complex results into simple visualizations that will empower department leaders to take decisive action; Develops trend analysis reports that monitor key performance indicators and compares them to internal and external benchmarks and uses this data to assist leadership in decision-making, planning and implementing performance improvement strategies; Analyzes report results with a focus on explaining changes, inconsistencies and any patters that are identified.

Experience:

Required:

Bachelor’s degree in Data Analytics, Statistics, Applied Math, Computer Science, Computer Information Systems or Management Information Systems, Marketing, Psychology or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; 5+ years’ experience in a data analyst role; Experience with enterprise reporting tools; three years of experience using SQL with preference to Microsoft T-SQL; 5 years of experience using Microsoft’s business intelligence suite or something comparable; 2 years of experience conducting forecasting models; 3 years of experience with statistical analysis using statistical packages for analyzing datasets (Excel, SPSS, R, SAS etc); 3 years of experience visualizing and presenting data for stakeholders using advanced data visualization tools like Tableau, D3 or ggplot, etc.; 2 years’ experience building dashboards;

 

Desired: Master’s degree in Statistics, Business, Computer Science, Economics, Engineering, Mathematics or other quantitative disciplines; Experience in the non-profit fundraising space; Familiarity with statistical algorithms such as linear and logistic regression, decision trees, neural networks, etc.; 2 years of project management/consulting experience; Experience working in an Agile SCRUM environment.
