Are We Dangerously Obsessed with Data Collection?

Every analyst wants to deliver meaningful value to their organization. Why, then, does it often seem like we’re just constantly fighting fires to get the data into good enough shape to do proper analyses, with no time left at the end of the day to actually put the data to work? In this talk, Tim will make the case that, as an industry, we’ve let ourselves get enamored with data collection and management to the detriment of putting enough focus on actually putting that data to meaningful use. And, he will describe a useful framework for the different ways that data can be put to use.

About Our Speaker

Tim is one of the co-founders of Columbus DAW and has been working with digital data full-time since 2001 in a variety of roles. He is a middle-aged guy in 2024, so he has a podcast. He is happiest when holed up with an analytical challenge that requires him to program something in R, but he also holds sufficiently strong opinions about the appropriate use of data and how data gets visualized that he “gets” to spend much of his time developing slides instead. He’s an analytics curmudgeon, but seems to be entertainingly so when we hand him a microphone, and that’s what we’re doing this month.
